Our doings

Acting for the greater good

Providing IT services may be seen as just another way to cash in on the exponential growth of the “virtual economy”. Not at Dynamic Network Services. We were founded as a free service, at a time the Internet was still mostly an academic and research tool. Today, as a highly profitable company, we strive to support and encourage the development and research communities whose hard work and efforts have made our ascension possible. Beyond actively taking part in our local community, we belong to that of the Internet.

Helping new developers

You start dying the day you stop looking for new talent: this is why most companies on the Internet close shop quickly or are forced to dramatically re-invent themselves every five years. At Dynamic Network Services, we closely work with regional schools and their technology majors, helping educate, train and guide aspiring developers, information architects and technology leaders.

Our small, technology minded team allows free spirited developers to thrive, suggest new solutions to our patrons’ problems and, most of all, be heard. Jeremy Hitchcock, our CEO, started in our team by helping ship servers and, to this day, still enjoys manning the support desk. Could one dream of a more relaxed, fraternal atmosphere?

Donating to open source projects

Open source software is about making sure technologies can never be imprisoned or stolen back, about ensuring they come free of political or personal bias. Open source software powers the world’s largest infrastructures as well as its largest corporations. Open source software is not about revolution, it is about people of all backgrounds getting together to build a quality product.

We started as a free service to help the Perl community and run most of our infrastructure on open source software. To this date, we have given close to $50,000 to open source projects, including OpenVPN and FreeBSD, helping promote their efforts, perform quality assurance and bug testing. We see this as an essential part of our contributions to the network and, every year, investigate ways to give more and give in more useful ways, whether by sending money, free accounts or machines.

A protocol of our own

When we started in the dynamic DNS business, there was no real standard, established way for the client to talk to the server and for the update process to take place. Sure, one had to rely on the Internet’s core protocols but what, exactly, was the thriftiest, most efficient way to go about it? As one of the largest providers of dynamic DNS services on the Internet, through our DynDNS.com service, we were naturally interested in answering that question.

On we went and devised the DNS Update Protocol, now used freely by a great many home enterprise devices, countless applications, recommended by our friends and even by our competitors. The result? More efficient network connectivity and a lesser load on the DNS infrastructure, benefiting everyone on the Internet – and certainly not just us. A drop in the ocean, maybe, but certainly a largish one. And after all, isn’t the ocean made of drops?

To this day, our DNS updating software has been downloaded more than 1.4 million times – and counting! While it has been specifically developed to pre-configure itself for our clients, it works quite well indeed with any compliant network or device, including, of course, those of our competitors.

As key players on the network, we believe it is our responsibility to ensure that users and aspiring developers everywhere are given access to quality training and reliable technologies. We can’t make it alone, but we sure try to do our part.
