When it comes to building one of the world’s leading networks, distributed across countries and time zones, and when it comes to keeping it up and running smoothly, day and night; against attacks and through major disruptions, it takes more than your average corporate white paper. To answer these specific needs, we have developed custom in-house technology to run our systems.

Open at the core

While our competitors often spend their time and their clients’ resources building platforms on the latest, coolest untested gizmos, we believe in keeping our core set of technologies clean, simple and real. Open source, time-tested technologies make up the foundation of our network, ensuring that our operations are freed from legal burdens, bugs and scaling issues.

Apache, Perl, FreeBSD and OpenVPN constitute the backbone of our system, from core routers to desktop stations. Our active involvement in open source communities ensures we can help define and promote the future of the technologies we rely upon, creating a rare and beneficial dynamic between our patrons, the industry at large and ourselves.

Custom cogs

The best clocks are built with the best cogs, crafted from the finest metal with care by skilled artisans. The same holds true for networks like our own. No less than 597,835 lines of code tie all the pieces of our infrastructure together: our eighty servers, thirty-five networking devices, interfaces, control panels and monitoring systems work hand in hand, day and night, to power, support and survey our patrons’ zones, domains and emails.

Written using open source languages, complemented by extensive engineering experience at every desk in the office, this custom software technology enables us to boast an unbeatable track record. Procedures of our own, made possible by the dedication and personal involvement of every member of our team, allow us to react smoothly to imponderables such as malicious attacks and major network disruptions.

Select hardware

Our network is comprised of custom-built servers, tied together by high-end Juniper routers, ensuring the smooth and reliable flow of data within and across all our data centers.

Our hardware assets are located in first-class networking facilities offering redundant Internet connections, power and air conditioning, ensuring optimal operating conditions for the ultimate in uptime. These facilities’ tight security and authentication procedures also ensure our users’ data stays protected, away from prying eyes.

Geographically spread

Even the most carefully built network stands no chance when confined to a single building. This is why we operate in data centers spread across five locations over two continents: Boston, Chicago, DC, San Jose and London constitute the bases from which our services are run.

The spread of this network ensures that even major disruptions on the web are unlikely to impact our operations as a whole, as each facility is able to operate individually and answer queries on behalf of any other should a location temporarily go down.
